An ancient craft originally practiced on ivory is adapted to different kinds of wood as well. The community of Ivory carvers still known as “Hast daant waale” from Rajasthan and Haryana, India have over the years evolved their craft to carving on wood as well. The craftsmen create decorative artifacts, jewelry, and utility products like lamps, boxes, photo frames and pen stands out of finely carved wood. These craftsmen generally work on sandalwood and the less expensive Kadam wood. Sandalwood is softer to work on and hence, requires slightly blunt tools as against sharper ones for the Kadam wood.
Carving involves shaping the wood to make objects of utility and chiseling parts of wood to form intricate designs, with the help of hand tools. The buyer will love the smooth lines and subtle detailing that gives this piece a sense of mystery. Other carved animals/designs add a bold attraction to produce a piece that you will love displaying on your shelf or table. The warm stain enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain.
